“Boy do you smell good”.
Has anyone ever said that to you? How did you feel? Did you stand a little taller? Walk with a little more confidence?
Whatever your reaction, it highlights a very important fact: the right cologne can make you feel like a million bucks.
Despite that, many men are running around out there (possibly even you) not wearing anything. Cologne that is….
This could be for a number of reasons: they don’t think it’s that important, or maybe they do, but feel overwhelmed by choice and don’t know where to start.
Let me put your mind at ease. It doesn’t have to be complicated.
In this post we’ll look at:
1. Why you should wear cologne; and
2. How to get started in selecting your new scent and the simple steps you can take.
But before we dive in, let’s look into some reasons why you should be wearing Cologne.
Why Should You Wear Cologne?
To name a few….
It makes you feel more attractive (which boosts your confidence) and this in turn makes you attractive to others.
Case in point. When I pass a guy that smells amazing, my reaction is immediate. My head turns, I’m checking him out, he’s like a magnet. Obsessed. That’s how important cologne is…It’s an immediate attention grabber.
It’s that intangible part of your personal style. Your style is not just about the clothes you wear. It includes all the little details, like your scent.
When you pay attention to these things, you’re perceived as being put together, and you take ownership and pride in how you look. It creates that “I can’t quite put my finger on it, he’s just the total package”. People Notice.
It introduces you before you do. Studies show that people can form an opinion of you within seven to 27 seconds of meeting you. And this can be done all before you’ve even had a chance to speak. Guys let your cologne introduce you. Remember that people are more likely to have a positive first impression of you if you smell good.
Smell is our strongest sense and the one that’s closely linked with our memories. Take away? Smell good and people will remember you.
Convinced yet? Great. Below I’ll give you 5 easy steps to get started.
How To Get Started
Step 1
Research. Research. Research.
If it’s been a while since your last cologne, you’ve never had cologne before, or maybe you’re sporting the one that your dad wore when you were 13, then your first step is always going to be looking at what’s out there.
How do you do that? Social Media. Head over to Instagram, or YouTube (that would be my first go-to) and just start reviewing what other popular YouTubers or Instagrammers are saying about different colognes.
Then based on those reviews, make a list of a few that you think you’ll like and go and test them out in person.
And if you ever pass a guy who’s wearing a scent that you like, don’t be afraid to ask them what it is! It doesn’t make you a creeper. It can be as simple as “Hey man can I ask what you’re wearing? I’m looking to switch up colognes”.
Step 2
Don’t go by written reviews.
Remember these are other people’s reviews, so take it with a grain of salt. While reviews can be incredibly helpful when it comes to purchasing different items, when it comes to something as personal as cologne, you really do need to try things for yourself. What works for someone might not work for you. You need to test.
Step 3
Choose your own Cologne!!
Don’t let someone else pick it for you. You are the one that will be wearing it. YOU. You have to like it.
Step 4
Take a friend. “Wait, Natasha, you just said to choose your own cologne”.
The thing is women are great at picking out scents. So it’s always a good idea to have someone with you to help when choosing a scent.
But again, you are in the driver’s seat. Be mindful of the fact that you have the final say.
The whole point of bringing a friend with you is that they should help to reinforce your selections (and to steer you away from the really nasty ones).
Step 5
Try on more than one scent. Even if you feel you’ve nailed it the first time.
Testing out a variety of colognes will help you to be extra sure of your selection. It’s like buying a house (yes it’s apples to oranges but the same rules apply). Most people wouldn’t just put an offer in on the first house they see, even if they love it. They want options because they want to know that their final choice is the best option for them.
Finally…..
Take your time. This is going to be your signature scent and you’ll be wearing this for a while so there’s no need to rush the process.
What if however, you discover in your search that there are one or more scents that you’re attracted to?
Don’t be afraid to ask for samples! Unless you’re in a drugstore, most department stores will give out samples.
And this can be a great way to try out a few new scents before you make that commitment on a whole bottle.
And that’s all there is to it! Easy right? In my next post on scent, I’ll give you my top choices for fall/winter (it’s good to switch things up).
I hope you found this helpful and I want to hear from you!- do you have a signature scent yet?
